We continue to pursue recycling, despite the fact that it is costly and many other small communities have chosen to abandon their programs. We have done so for a number of reasons. First, it is the right thing to do. Second, the majority (all?) of our residents think that it is the right thing to do. Thirdly, it will extend the life of our landfill sites, thus avoiding the cost of closing (yes, there is a cost associated with closing existing sites, and it is very costly), not to mention the difficult, if not impossible, process of finding a new location (the cost associated with this would be several times that of site closure).
If the recycling program is to work efficiently, and at the lowest possible cost, we ask that the recycling instructions be carefully adhered to (Recycling Program).
We have been issued non-compliance orders from the Ministry of Environment in the past. These orders indicate that our designated areas are not properly sorted. For example, paint cans/metals/etc. are being dumped in the wood pile, plastics are being deposited in the metal pile, etc.
Anything hauled to our landfill sites and recycling areas must be deposited/separated accordingly. There are well marked signs at our landfill sites. However, it you are unsure of ‘where’ certain materials should be deposited, please ask the landfill attendant.
With a little effort on all of our parts, the reward is substantial. Let us all do our part to avoid premature landfill site closure.
Thank you for recycling.
