- Heritage, Arts, and Culture -

The community strives to be an incubator space for tourism, cultural development and a community source for artisans, crafters, musicians, and artists. We thrive on discovering our natural surroundings, exploring ideas and bringing people together in new ways to discover what is important to them. Following this idea is the Bridge and Falls Cultural Series, where the overall mission is to celebrate diversity of values, ideas and events with three essential and guiding principles: people, connection, and the natural beauty of the eastern shores of Lake of the Woods. We want to give summer residents and tourists from near and far away, a reason to stay and play in the communities of Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls.

Book Trading Post

Book Trading Post

Lake of the Woods Book Trading Posts – for Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls will foster a love of reading, advocate for literacy, and create opportunities for neighbours of all walks of life to connect to each other. Little free libraries is a community movement that offers free books housed in small containers to members of the local communities.

Our very own BOOK TRADING POST now stands, close to the entrance of the Northern Ontario Sportfishing Centre, adding to the streetscape and book culture in Sioux Narrows. Jake Blosser designed and constructed the BOOK TRADING POST finding his inspiration in the Boreal Forest in rural and remote northwestern Ontario. The BOOK TRADING POST is operational from May long weekend to September long weekend! We encourage you to come on down – to take a book and to leave a book!

Nestor Falls Community members designed and built the BOOK TRADING POST for Nestor Falls.   It is located at the Nestor Falls Information Centre.

You too can join in on the fun: LITTLE LIBRARY owners can create their own library box, usually about the size of a doll house. Bill Thompson, Former Mayor of The Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls stated, “I encourage all residents, young and old, to come out to build their very own Little Free Library!

The idea of LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES was popularized in Hudson, Wisconsin in 2009 when Todd Bol mounted a wooden container designed to look like a school house on a post on his lawn as a tribute to his mother, who was a book lover and school teacher. He posted a sign on the small structure encouraging curious visitors to “Take a Book, Leave a Book.”

Bridge & Falls Studios and Residencies

Bridge & Falls Studios and Residencies

In all four seasons, Northwestern Ontario is one of the most beautiful and geographically interesting place on earth. Sunset country truly is the perfect place for any creative person to get inspired. In the summer of 2020, the creative residency summer programme, hosted by the Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls, is on hold until 2021. Bridge & Falls Creative Residency: A Culture, A Tribe, A Community

Summer Series, 2020

For the summer of 2020, two tiny studios will be in use. They are for day-use only. ON THE WATER and ON THE ROCK are both equipped with a workspace and modest furnishings. The tiny studios are not fitted with electrical or plumbing.

For that reason, the locations of the two studios are within walking distance of Township owned & operated facilities that do offer restroom facilities. The ON THE WATER tiny floating studio is near the government docks and the Northern Ontario Sportfishing Centre (NOSFC) in Sioux Narrows. The ON THE ROCK (8’ x 20’) studio is at the head of a trail, tucked in the woods, and just up the hill from the Travel Centre in Nestor Falls, ON.

All artists can use the libraries in both communities. If your residency is in Nestor Falls, you are welcome to recharge and connect to wi-fi at the Travel Centre. And, if your residency is in Sioux Narrows, you can plug in and power up at the Northern Ontario Sportfishing Centre.

ON THE WATER is a tiny studio on a floating platform. The floating studio is intended to connect the user to water, one of the four elements of nature and is designed/ constructed to allow the user to freely relate to the outdoors. It is ideally situated close to shops, stoves, and amenities in the small community of Sioux Narrows.

The artist residency site is perched on top of an undulating bedrock surface at the head of a prominent walking trail for the community of Nestor Falls. How the building touches the site is very important, the intention, to follow the changing elevation of the rock, making delicate connections that seem to float above the surface. Natural light floods the interior of the space, and the warmth of the cedar projects through the polycarbonate wall system.

The ON THE ROCK studio is just south of Nestor Falls where you will find shops, a grocery store, and the amenities of a rural, community in northwestern Ontario.

BOTH STUDIOS will be made available to local & regional crafters, artists and creative minds who wish to develop their personal/ collective bodies of work. Perhaps you are a quilter and wish to work with a group of like-minded individuals for a few days on a special project or maybe you are a photographer and you need some time away from the hustle n bustle of everyday life. Mayor & Council have endorsed the studio availability and our Cultural Officer will work with you on a case-by-case basis. Studio availability and bookings are based on a first-come/ first-serve basis. This program is subject to change. For more information, please contact Denise Lysak at [email protected]

The creative residency provides artists with unique and intense opportunities to develop their art practice and to network with other artists, writers, carvers, photojournalists, etc. In short, we provide day-use studios, and subsidies to help offset expenses in support of a one-week long, self-guided residency. If the artist is willing, some residencies will feature a community engagement piece. Imagine, if you will: a talkback session around a campfire; an exhibition of a painter’s pieces; or maybe, a group excursion – a trail walk, in the woods, with a photographer.  Almost anything is possible! The MOVING GALLERY is a tiny studio with walls, windows and yes "wheels" fitted with original literary, audio, and visual art in celebration of Canada150. In the summer of 2017, the MOVING GALLERY will pop-up at fairs, festivals and farmers markets throughout rural and remote northwestern Ontario.

From the telling of Aboriginal stories to creating a chalkboard wall and displaying original paintings, the MOVING GALLERY creates a distinctive platform that will bring together writers and unsuspecting audiences in a pan-Canadian collaboration. The MOVING GALLERY is a mobile space and takes its cues from the phenomena sweeping across North America with “tiny houses”. The MOVING GALLERY is actually an artist studio on wheels and it will pop-up at festivals, fairs and farmers market throughout northwestern Ontario, providing Canadians in rural and remote areas with opportunities to develop a greater understanding of Canada, its people and what it means to be Canadian in all of its complexities. Through its very design, the literary works and visual arts pieces will be shared with the general public and will recognize and promote exceptional Canadian people, places, achievements and events that have shaped our country.

The MOVING GALLERY will house the stories and artwork in surprising and contemporary ways – from word walls to podcasts on iPods to picture books on a coffee table. The MOVING GALLERY will be purpose-built, fun and interactive and the stories and art that we share will weave their way through our nation’s history, commemorating and celebrating 150 years by exploring the universal theme of water in a singular way that is quintessential NWO and Canada.

Each artist will develop their body of work, around the notion of water and in the larger context, how it ebbs and flows, how it sustains planet Earth, how it informs a geography and a people, and how as Canadians it ties us all together, connecting time, places, and generations.
