Aspen Trail

Difficulty: Challenging by bike, Intermediate by foot.
Total Distance: 4.5 km Single Loop
Trail Type: Hiking and Snowshoeing
Sioux Narrows. Trailhead is 1 km south of Hwy 71 on Dubois Rd.

This 4.5km trail runs deep into the Ontario forest where the sound of traffic stops and the gentle sounds of the forest awaken your senses. The gentle slopes of this path make for an easier journey, but the distance traveled makes you feel detached from it all.

Update June 10: The trail is fully open and clear, with wet spots around the beaver ponds, which remain damp even during dry seasons. Ticks are present, and mosquitoes seem fewer than typical due to dry conditions. All other sections are accessible. Please report any downed trees if encountered along the route. Enjoy your hike!


Boreal Trail

Difficulty: Challenging
Total Distance: 7 km Short loop
Trail Type: Hiking and Snowshoeing
Nestor Falls. Trailhead is south of Nestor Falls at the information centre.

This trail’s long distance, steep hills and obstacles make for a very challenging hike or ride but with incredible vistas. There is a shortcut that makes a smaller loop, but it still carries the signature difficulties. Either way you choose, it’s a memorable and beautiful trail any season.

Update June 10:
This is a wilderness trail, so maintenance is less frequent. Long grass has been reported, and bear scat has been observed in three areas. A downed tree on the eastern long loop before the short loop junction is easily passable, and these issues are expected to be resolved before the weekend. Possible wet spots in low-lying areas, especially after rain, but they are not expected to last. Ticks are present, while mosquitoes seem fewer than typical due to dry conditions. All loop sections remain accessible. Please report any downed trees if encountered along the route.

Caliper Park Nature Trail

Difficulty: Moderate
Total Distance: 3.63 km Double loop
Trail Type: Hiking

This trail is closed due to downed trees. Check the Trails Update Blog for news.

Latest Update

This trail was hit hard from a storm in 2022. The northern section has been cleared of trees, providing a unique landscape that runs deep into the forest. For up to date trail info, check in with park staff before adventuring up the nature trail.

Fern Valley Trail

Difficulty: Easy
Total Distance: 4 km Multiple entrances
Trail Type: Hiking, Mountain Biking and Cross Country Skiing

This relaxed 4km trail has an optional lookout loop overlooking the lake and beach. The summer ferns, gentle hills and tall trees help you create a great a memory no matter the season, and the lake itself is perfect for swimming! Parking is free at the Aspen trailhead, and Fern Valley has an entrance visible across the road. As an option, you could get a day pass to park a vehicle within the park, go hiking, enjoy the beach, have a picnic, then get a cool treat at the guardhouse on your way to another adventure!

Update June 10th:
Ticks are present, and mosquitoes seem fewer than typical due to dry conditions. Ferns are young but open, while grasses are trying to reclaim the trail. A few small areas of water may linger for a few days after rain. Trail improvements are underway between Fern Valley and the Aspen Trail parking lot, so keep an eye out for changes. If you're lucky, you might spot pink flagging tape in the forest—offering a glimpse of a new trail in the making!


Red Pine Trail

Difficulty: Easy
Total Distance: 6 km Maze-style with long loop
Trail Type: Hiking, Mountain Biking, Snowshoeing, Cross Country Skiing

This maze of trails takes you through such varying landscapes and views from thick red pines, massive boulders, and lake views. The optional long 3km loop around the perimeter lets you see every view, and takes you deep into the forest. You will get back to the trailhead with many memories and a smile. 3 trails within Red Pine have been made for mountain bikes!

Update June 10th:
Ticks are present, and mosquitoes seem fewer than typical due to dry conditions. Workers are actively upgrading the trails, with new and expanded bike routes and fresh walking paths in progress. The new parking lot and picnic tables are a fantastic addition, making the area perfect for recreation. Whether you're biking, hiking, or just enjoying the outdoors, Red Pine Trail is shaping up beautifully!

New Trail Coming to Sioux Narrows in 2025

Delays have pushed back this project until 2025. Check the Trails Updates Blog for news and updates for progress!

Know Before You Go

Hiking is an incredible way to connect with nature, but there are a few things to keep in mind before setting out.

  • Inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time.
  • Cell phone coverage is available on all Township hiking trails, and even phones without a plan or SIM card can call 911 in case of emergencies.
  • Fallen trees or hazards on the trails can be reported directly from the Trailhead sign using your smartphone, by emailing trails@snnf.ca, or by calling 807-226-5241 Ext. 210 (Mon-Fri 8 am to 4:30pm)
  • During dry conditions, please ensure flames and possible sources of ignition are carefully handled.
