Doing Right by Animals in Our Community

Many members of our community care deeply about the wellbeing of animals. Recently a litter of puppies was found at a regional landfill site. Moments like this give us an opportunity to remind ourselves of the amazing volunteer work taking place across the region regarding animal care, to share resources, and to support one another in the care of vulnerable animals we come across.
Local rescues and foster networks, such as A Dog’s Life, and the Kenora Cat Shelter play a huge role in keeping animals safe in our communities. Supporting or contacting a shelter can make all the difference for an animal in need. These organizations are all volunteer based and rely on a large regional support network of volunteers and resources to ensure the well-being and safety of our community’s creatures. You don’t have to wait for an animal in distress to get involved. These organizations are continually seeking donations, and volunteers to support the work that they undertake in our community.
If you find a wounded animal or animal in distress (domestic or wild) you can reach out to one of the regional veterinary clinics. These clinics are well connected and will be able to provide advice and contact information for the local wildlife rehabilitation programs, or volunteer organizations who can support the animal.
If you ever come across an abandoned animal or a situation that feels upsetting or overwhelming involving an animal, and you are unsure on what to do next. Reach out for help. There are so many people and organizations in our region there to support you. Making a call, reporting what you have found, or contacting a local organization may feel small in the moment but you are making a big impact on the entire life of these animals.
If you find yourself caring for an animal you can no longer keep, or if you come across an abandoned animal. Reach out. Help is available.
In Ontario, animal welfare concerns can be reported through the Ontario Animal Protection Call Centre. When you file a report, it is directed to the appropriate authority, such as Provincial Animal Welfare Services inspectors or police, depending on the situation. You can also contact Ontario Provincial Police Animal Abuse at 1 833 9ANIMAL or 1 833 926 4625. These services exist to protect animals and to support people in making safe, guilt-free choices.
As a community, we can work together to ensure the safety of animals in our community. If you are overwhelmed, unsure, or facing a difficult decision involving an animal, please reach out. Asking for help is always the right move.
